How to price a Caribbean week

1. Pick the island group. The BVI is the volume market and the easiest sailing; St Lucia, Grenada, the Grenadines, Antigua and Martinique are all separate bases with separate fleets and longer passages.
2. Read low against high season. Both published sources roughly double between low and high season for the same boat. December to April is the expensive half.
3. Compare monohull to catamaran honestly. Sunsail's own low-season figures are about $3,500 for the monohull and about $5,700 for the catamaran. The catamaran is the more comfortable boat and the price says so.
4. Add the cruising permits and the mooring balls. BVI cruising permits and National Parks fees are charged per person per day and are not in any published rate.

Two companies, comparable figures

The Moorings' BVI page states $3,284 to $49,584 for a 7 day charter for 2 people. Sunsail's BVI page puts a low-season bareboat 42ft monohull at around $3,500 and a four-cabin catamaran at around $5,700, with high-season equivalents around $7,000 and $10,000. Those are the same order of magnitude from two companies in the same group, which is a useful sanity check on both.

Read them as the boat for seven days rather than as a per-person price. Six people on a four-cabin catamaran at $5,700 is a different proposition from two people on it, and the yacht costs the same either way.

Miami, and the other Caribbean

YachtCharterFleet publishes from $12,000 a week against the 20m motor yacht Gypsy on its Miami page, which is a different market again: crewed motor yacht charter out of Florida rather than bareboat sailing out of Tortola. It is in this record because it is one of very few places in the trade that prints a weekly figure against a named yacht on a public page, and because Miami is where a great many American charter searches start.

The extras, in the trade's own numbers

A published weekly rate is the yacht. Everything else is charged on top, and the extras are large enough to change which boat you can afford. Sailing Holidays in Croatia publishes the clearest breakdown found in this record: a skipper at 1.260 EUR a week paid separately at embarkation, fuel around 100 EUR a week on a sailboat, marina and port fees averaging 450 EUR a week, and tourist tax at 1.35 EUR per person per day. On a crewed yacht the Advance Provisioning Allowance replaces most of that with one much larger number, and VAT or the local charter tax sits on top of both.

Is a catamaran worth the extra?

On Sunsail's own published figures a low-season catamaran is around $5,700 against about $3,500 for a monohull. You are buying deck space, stability and separate cabins rather than speed, and for a group of six or eight it is usually the cheaper boat per person.

What is not included in a Caribbean charter price?

Fuel, cruising permits and National Parks fees, provisioning, any skipper or crew, and the security deposit. On a crewed yacht the Advance Provisioning Allowance covers most of the running costs and is charged on top of the weekly fee.
