Yacht charter Sweden: what a Baltic week costs, and what a yacht charter northern europe season really looks like

Sweden has thirty thousand islands in the Stockholm archipelago alone and one of the shortest charter seasons in Europe. It is also cheap by Mediterranean standards, it has almost no tide, and the right of public access means you may anchor or tie to a rock almost anywhere. Those three things together make it the most underrated charter ground on this continent.

What a boat costs

Read on 11 September 2026, Click and Boat lists 140 boats in Sweden at an average of 738 EUR a day, from a floor of 30 to a ceiling of 3,947, and Sailo lists 57. Against Click and Boat's Croatian average of 588 EUR and Greek average of 775 across thousands of boats, Sweden is not expensive: what it is, is a fleet of a few hundred boats serving a ten week season.

The archipelago, and what allemansratten allows

The Stockholm archipelago runs sixty miles east from the city through some thirty thousand islands and skerries, most of them uninhabited granite. The Swedish right of public access lets you land, anchor and moor on undeveloped shore, and the local practice is to go bow to a rock with a stern anchor out, which is a skill the briefing covers. Guest harbours exist in the larger villages and are cheap by Mediterranean standards.

The season, which is ten weeks

Mid June to late August, and the ends of it are cold. Midsummer, in the third week of June, is the single busiest week on this water and the one every Swede is out on. July is the reliable month. By September the fleets are winterising. Northern Europe as a whole runs the same shape: Norway from mid June to early September, Denmark and the Baltic similar, and nothing at all between October and May.

Bareboat charter, Sweden: what it asks of a crew

Pilotage, above all. The archipelago is a maze of unmarked rock, the charts are good and must be read continuously, and the navigation is close quarters at low speed rather than passage making. There is almost no tide and little swell, so it is technically undemanding in every other respect. Crews who find the Mediterranean's mooring stressful often find this easier, and the reverse is also true.
