Almost nothing on the Amalfi coast is a sailing boat, and the reason is the shape of the day people buy. The coast is a forty mile run of cliffs with no shelter and no anchorage worth the name, so a boat here is transport between Positano, Amalfi and Capri, and transport wants an engine.
What is actually listed
Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 312 boats in reach of Sorrento at an average of 1,808 EUR a day, from 263 to 7,350, and the named listings are motor: a 38 foot Aprea Libeccio at 1,080 EUR for eight hours, a 35 foot Apreamare gozzo at 1,400 for eight hours. At Naples, 12 boats at an average of 2,498 EUR a day, where a captained 60 foot Nautor Swan of 2021 at 1,715 EUR for eight hours is the sailing exception that proves the rule.
Why the coast does not suit sail
There is no anchorage between Sorrento and Salerno that is tenable in anything but a flat calm, the marinas are small and expensive and reserved months ahead, and the wind in the Bay of Naples is light and fluky in summer with a sea breeze that arrives late. A sailing boat here motors most of the day and pays a berth for the privilege. The gozzo, the local wooden launch, is what the water actually wants.
Where a sailing week goes instead
Out of Naples or Castellammare to Procida, Ischia and Ponza, which are real islands with real anchorages, then south to Capri and the Cilento. Nautilus Yachting prices an Italian low season two to three cabin bareboat monohull at around 1,200 GBP a week, which is the country floor. That week has the Amalfi coast in it as a day rather than as its spine, and it is the better trip.
