Bareboat sailing charters: what a week costs and what the hire includes

A bareboat sailing charter is the most common product in this trade and the cheapest way to spend a week aboard. You take a sailing yacht from a base on a Saturday, sail it where you like within the company's cruising area, and bring it back the following Friday or Saturday. Everything else about the arrangement follows from the fact that nobody comes with it.

What a sailboat bareboat charter week costs

Croatia Yachting prints from 752 euro against a three cabin Hanse 415 at D-Marin Mandalina in Sibenik. Nautilus Yachting publishes around 1,200 pounds for a two to three cabin bareboat monohull in low season Italy. Those are the two lowest published sailing weeks in this record, and they bracket what a small monohull costs outside the peak in the Mediterranean.

What bareboat hire includes

The yacht, its sails and engine, the safety equipment, usually a tender, bedding and a galley inventory, and the handover briefing. It does not include fuel, berthing along the way, local tourist or charter taxes, provisioning, the end cleaning, the transit log where one applies, or a skipper. On a small boat those extras can approach a third of the charter fee, and they are the reason two comparable quotes end differently.

Where sailing rentals differ from a day rental

It is a contract rather than a booking. There is a security deposit, a documented inventory, a named skipper whose certificates are checked, and a handback inspection. A day rental has none of that because the boat comes back the same evening. The word rental is used for both, which is why so many people price a week by multiplying a day rate and arrive at a number nobody would ever charge.

Choosing the boat rather than the brochure

Within a fleet the price difference between a 2015 and a 2024 hull of the same size is real, and so is the difference in how the week feels. Ask the year, the cabin and heads count, whether it has a bimini and a bow thruster, and when it was last antifouled. A company that will not name the boat is quoting you a class rather than a yacht, and the yacht you get will be the one nobody asked for.
