Greece sells a captain two ways. On a week long charter the skipper is quoted per day on top of the boat and eats and sleeps aboard. On a day rental from an island quay the captain is usually already in the price, because almost nothing is let bareboat in the Cyclades. The two products are priced on different bases and the searches mix them.
A captained day in the islands
Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 29 boats at Santorini at an average of 1,612 EUR a day, from 350 to 9,600, including a captained 34 foot Dufour Gibsea for eight guests at 380 EUR for eight hours, a captained 36 foot Abbate Primatist for four at 1,000 EUR for four hours, and an 18 foot license free boat for five at 250 EUR for four hours. Kefalonia lists a captained 44 foot Bavaria out of Argostoli at 800 EUR for eight hours.
A skipper on a week
Istion Yachting offers its Greek fleet bareboat or skippered on the same listing, from 3.510 EUR a week for a Bali Catspace out of Athens and 4.950 for an Excess 14 out of Lefkas, with the skipper quoted separately per day. This is the usual Greek arrangement, and it exists partly because Greek law requires a certificate of competence and a VHF license from a bareboat skipper, so a crew without them has to take one.
The smaller Cycladic islands
Naxos, Paros and the rest carry a local day fleet rather than a charter base: RIBs, small motor cruisers and a handful of sailing boats, hired by the half day with a skipper aboard, and priced in the same band as the Santorini listings. What they do not carry is a bareboat fleet, so a week in the Cyclades is chartered from Athens, Paros or Kos and sailed to them.
Questions people ask about Greece boat rental with captain
How much is a captained boat in Greece?
Sailo lists a captained 34 foot Dufour at Santorini at 380 EUR for eight hours and a captained 44 foot Bavaria at Argostoli at 800 EUR for eight hours, read on 11 September 2026.
Is a skipper included on a week?
No. Greek fleets quote the skipper separately per day on top of the boat, and Istion offers its fleet bareboat or skippered on the same listing, from 3.510 EUR a week for a Bali Catspace.
Can you rent a boat on Naxos?
By the day, yes: RIBs, small motor cruisers and a few sailing boats with a skipper aboard. There is no bareboat fleet there, so a Cycladic week is chartered from Athens, Paros or Kos.
Why do you need a captain in Greece?
For a bareboat, Greek law requires a certificate of competence and a VHF license from the named skipper plus a declared co skipper. A crew without those documents takes a skipper or a skippered package.
