Best place to sail in october: the cruising grounds ranked on what their own fleets publish

October is the best value month in the sailing year and the least understood. Half the northern hemisphere's grounds are in their last good weeks and priced as though they were finished, the Caribbean is still closed, and one ground is entering its season rather than leaving it. What follows is ranked on figures the fleets themselves publish.

Best place to sail in october: the ranking, and the criterion

  1. Croatia and the Adriatic: The steepest published discount anywhere in this record. Pitter Yachtcharter prices named boats for named weeks: a Bavaria Cruiser 40 Avantgarde at 838 EUR for the week of 24 October against a list price of 1.197, and a Bavaria Cruiser 40 S at 1.374 for late September against 2.290. The sea is still warm from the summer, the town quays are empty and the bora has not settled in.
  2. The Canary Islands: The one ground entering its season rather than leaving it. Sailo lists 61 boats at an average of 1,101 EUR a day, from 180 to 1,990, and October is the beginning of a winter that runs to April with twenty two degree air and a steady trade wind. The channels between the islands accelerate that wind hard, so it is a capable crew's month rather than a first bareboat.
  3. Greece and the Ionian: Third only because the season ends inside the month. The meltemi has gone, the sea is at its warmest and Nautilus Yachting's around 900 GBP for a low season two to three cabin monohull is an October figure rather than a November one. By the last week the Ionian bases begin winterising and the choice of boats narrows sharply, so early October is a different proposition from late.

Why October is priced the way it is

Charter fleets sell a fixed number of weeks a year and the marginal cost of an empty boat is almost all of the price, so October carries the discounts a brochure will not print. Pitter's dated offers are the clearest evidence in this record: 838 EUR against a 1.197 list for the same boat in the same marina, a difference of thirty percent, three weeks after the summer ended.

What October is not good for

The Caribbean, which is inside the hurricane season until the end of November and where the fleets are thin and the insurance is a question. The Bahamas, for the same reason. Northern Europe, where Sweden and Norway have winterised by the end of September. And the Cyclades in the last week, when the ferries reduce and the town quays start to empty of the services a charter depends on.

The one thing to check before booking

The base's own closing date. Mediterranean fleets do not all finish on the same day and several run to the end of October while their neighbors stop in the first week. A cheap late October week on a boat whose base shuts the day you are due back is not a bargain. Ask for the last handover date of the season in writing rather than assuming the calendar.

Questions people ask about best place to sail in october

Where should you sail in October?

Croatia for the steepest discount, where Pitter listed a Bavaria Cruiser 40 at 838 EUR for a late October week against a 1.197 list price, or the Canaries, which are entering their season rather than leaving it.

Is the Caribbean an option?

Not really. The hurricane season runs officially to the end of November, the fleets are thin and the insurance position is a real question. December is when that ground reopens properly.

Why is October so much cheaper?

Fleets sell a fixed number of weeks and an empty boat earns nothing, so the discounts that never reach a brochure appear in dated offers. Pitter's own listings show thirty percent off the list price three weeks after the summer.
