Yacht charter canary islands: what a boat costs, and why boat rental gran canaria is a winter market

The Canaries are the one European charter ground that is at its best in winter. Twenty eight degrees north, a hundred miles off the Sahara, with water in the low twenties in February and a trade wind that blows from the north east most of the year. What they are not is a sheltered archipelago: the channels between the islands are deep, windy and serious.

What a boat costs

Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 61 boats across the Canary Islands at an average of 1,101 EUR a day, from a floor of 180 to a ceiling of 1,990. The bases are at Las Palmas and Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos on Tenerife, and Puerto Calero on Lanzarote. Las Palmas is also where the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers starts every November, which fills the marina for a month.

The channels, which are the whole story

The gaps between the islands accelerate the trade wind and funnel it: the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria routinely blows ten knots harder than either coast, and the acceleration zones off the southern capes are stronger again. There is no shallow water and almost no anchoring, so the cruising is marina to marina. It is excellent sailing for a capable crew and not a gentle first bareboat.

Winter, and why that matters

Every other European ground in this record closes or empties between November and March. The Canaries run year round, with January and February giving twenty two degree air, twenty degree water and a steady trade wind. Prices in those months are ordinary rather than peak, because the European charter customer has not yet worked out that the islands are there.
