Bodrum yacht charter: gulets, monohulls and where the week goes

Bodrum is where the gulet trade was built and it is still the largest concentration of them anywhere. It is also a bareboat base with a marina, an airport an hour away and a coastline that runs west into the Greek Dodecanese across a very short stretch of water. Which of those two markets you are in decides everything about the price.

The gulet side

GuletBroker lists Grande Mare, a 33m gulet carrying 12 guests in six cabins out of Bodrum, from 17,150 EUR a week. Its published Turkish bands put a luxury gulet carrying ten to twelve at 12,000 to 15,000 EUR in low season and 24,000 to 30,000 in high season, which brackets that boat across the year. Crew are included; food, fuel and harbour fees usually are not.

Bodrum yacht rental: the bareboat side

Nautilus Yachting publishes around 900 pounds a week for a two to three cabin monohull in Turkish low season and notes that Turkish mooring fees are among the lowest in the Mediterranean. Bodrum is one of the bases that figure covers. It is a very different holiday from a gulet at a fraction of the price, and the two are rarely compared properly because nobody quotes them side by side.

Where a Bodrum week goes

West and south along the Gulf of Gokova, which is sheltered, deep and lined with bays that have a restaurant and a jetty and nothing else. Longer weeks reach Datca and the Hisaronu gulf. The Greek islands of Kos and Kalymnos are within sight, and crossing to them is a real border with clearance both ways, which most charter agreements either restrict or price separately.

The meltemi, which shapes the summer

The same northerly that dominates the Aegean reaches this coast and blows hardest in July and August, which is why Bodrum weeks usually run downwind west in the morning and motor back. Gulets handle it by motoring; bareboat crews should plan the week with it rather than against it, and expect the afternoon to be windier than the forecast suggests in the gulfs.
