Yacht charter New Zealand: what a boat costs, and why the season runs opposite to everywhere else

New Zealand charters in the northern hemisphere's winter, which is the single most useful thing to know about it. The season runs November to April, the Bay of Islands and the Hauraki Gulf are the grounds, and a country with more boats per head than almost anywhere has a surprisingly small charter fleet because most of the people who sail there own one.

What is published

Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 8 boats in New Zealand at an average of 1,244 USD a day, from 1,150 to about 1,330, and Click and Boat lists 2 at an average of 2,101 EUR a day. Those are tiny fleets on the international marketplaces, and the real charter trade here is local: operators in Opua and Auckland who list on their own sites rather than on a marketplace.

The Bay of Islands

A hundred and forty four islands in a sheltered bay at the top of the North Island, with Opua as the charter base. Hops are one to two hours, the anchorages are sand, and the whole ground is protected from ocean swell. It is the New Zealand equivalent of the British Virgin Islands and it is where almost every bareboat week here goes.

The Hauraki Gulf

On Auckland's doorstep, with Waiheke forty minutes out, Great Barrier fifty miles north east and the Coromandel across the water. It is busier, closer to a major city and better supplied, and the sailing is more exposed than the Bay of Islands. A week can do either; almost nobody does both, because the passage between them is a hundred and twenty miles of open coast.
