Day hire is the transparent half of this trade. Because the boats are listed individually and booked quickly, the prices are on the page, and you can usually see a real number before you speak to anyone. That is the opposite of the charter week market, where the default is to quote on enquiry, and the two should never be compared directly.
What a day actually costs, in two published forms
Sailo listed a 37ft Monterry in Miami at $395 per 2 hours and a 32ft motor yacht in Dubai at $200, which is how the powerboat day market is usually sold: in slots rather than days, because the boat can turn over three times between breakfast and sunset. Boataround publishes a 16.7m Solaris 55 at Porto Rotondo in Sardinia from 706 USD or 592 EUR a day, read on 11 September 2026, marked skippered. Those are two different products at two ends of the same market and both are honest day rates.
Rent a boat for the day or by the block: how it is sold
Small powerboats are usually sold in two, four or eight hour blocks and priced accordingly, so an eight hour day is rarely four times a two hour slot. Larger sailing and motor yachts are sold by the day and often come with a skipper by default, because insurers and local rules make an unqualified charterer expensive. Ask which unit you are being quoted in before comparing anything: a day rate and a half day rate look similar written down.
What sits outside the day rate
Fuel almost always, and it is the item that surprises people most on a powerboat, where a hard day's running can approach the hire itself. Beyond that: a skipper if one is required rather than chosen, the fuel dock's own pricing, any park or mooring fees where you stop, and a security deposit held against the boat. A sailing day burns very little fuel, which is a real cost difference rather than a preference.
Why a day rate does not price a week
Seven day rates is not a charter week and the gap is large in both directions. A charter week is a fleet contract with a Saturday handover, a security deposit and a boat you sleep aboard; a day boat goes back to its berth. Companies that publish both, and there are few, price the week well under seven days of hire. Pricing a week by multiplying is the most common budgeting mistake in this trade.
Questions people ask about cost to rent a boat for a day
How much does it cost to rent a boat for a day?
It depends entirely on the boat. Sailo listed a 37ft Monterry in Miami at $395 for two hours and a 32ft motor yacht in Dubai at $200; Boataround publishes a 16.7m Solaris 55 in Sardinia from 706 USD or 592 EUR a day, read on 11 September 2026, skippered. Both read on 11 September 2026.
Is a day boat sold by the hour or the day?
Small powerboats are usually sold in two, four or eight hour blocks; larger sailing and motor yachts by the day, often with a skipper included by default.
Is fuel included in a day rate?
Almost never. On a powerboat a hard day's running can approach the cost of the hire itself, which is the single biggest difference between a motor day and a sailing day.
