Sailing Montenegro: what rent a boat Montenegro costs, and what the Bay of Kotor gives that Croatia does not

Montenegro has twenty eight miles of coast and one of the best pieces of water in Europe on it. The Bay of Kotor is a drowned river canyon that runs seventeen miles inland between mountains rising twelve hundred metres straight from the shore, and it is the reason a country this small has a charter market at all.

What a boat costs

Read on 11 September 2026, Click and Boat lists 583 boats in Montenegro at an average of 805 EUR a day, from a floor of 141 to a ceiling of 2,444, and Sailo lists 93 at an average of 863 EUR a day, from 400 to 2,330. The two averages agree closely, which is unusual in this record and suggests a market with one clear shape rather than two fleets.

The Bay of Kotor

Seventeen miles from the Adriatic through the Verige narrows to Kotor at the head, with Perast, its two islets and Risan on the way. The water is deep to the shore and sheltered from everything, and the town walls of Kotor climb the mountain behind it. There is no other anchorage in the Mediterranean that looks like this, and it is an hour and a half from the sea rather than a day.

Montenegro against Croatia

Croatia has the islands, Montenegro has the fjord. Dubrovnik is thirty miles north of the border and a great many Croatian charters come south for two nights in the bay, which means clearing customs twice. Chartering in Montenegro instead saves the paperwork and costs less: Click and Boat's Croatian average is 588 EUR a day across 8,039 boats against 805 across 583 here, and Montenegro's marinas at Porto Montenegro and Portonovi are newer.

What a week does

The bay properly takes two or three days. Beyond it the coast runs twenty miles south past Budva, Sveti Stefan and the Bay of Trasta to the Albanian border, and there is little shelter along it. So a Montenegrin week is a bay week with a coastal excursion, or a one way north into Croatia's southern islands with a border crossing at each end.
