Marmaris is the biggest charter harbour in Turkey and one of the biggest in the Mediterranean, with a natural bay the size of a small sea and a yard trade that keeps several hundred boats working. It is also the gateway to the gulfs of Gokova and Hisaronu, which are among the best sheltered cruising grounds anywhere.
What Turkey costs
Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 555 boats in reach of Marmaris, and The Moorings prices a seven day Turkish charter for two from 7,224 USD, which is the highest entry price it publishes anywhere in the world and runs to 31,229. Those two figures describe different ends of the same harbour: the marketplace lists day boats and gulets, and the international fleet prices a bareboat week at a premium the local market does not.
The gulfs
West of Marmaris the Hisaronu gulf runs thirty miles between a peninsula and the mainland, and beyond it the Gokova gulf runs fifty more towards Bodrum. Both are sheltered from the meltemi by high ground, both have anchorages with restaurant pontoons where a boat ties up for nothing and eats ashore, and neither has swell. The sailing is a sea breeze that fills at noon and dies at dusk.
The gulet, which is the local boat
A wooden motorsailer of twenty to thirty metres with a crew of three or four, chartered by the week with meals included, and the shape most Turkish charters actually take. It is sold as a blue cruise, it sleeps eight to sixteen in cabins below, and it costs far less per head than a crewed yacht anywhere in the western Mediterranean. Marmaris and Bodrum are where the gulet fleet lives.
