Maldives yacht charter: what it costs and why nobody bareboats the atolls

The Maldives is a thousand coral islands in twenty six atolls strung across five hundred miles of the Indian Ocean, and it is the least bareboat friendly cruising ground of any size in the world. Almost every charter here is crewed, and the reason is navigation rather than luxury.

Yacht rental Maldives: what it costs

Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 45 boats in the Maldives at an average of 3,350 USD a day, from a floor of 2,200, and Click and Boat lists 19 at an average of 4,142 EUR a day from a floor of 738. Those are among the highest averages in this record, and the floor is high because the cheap end of most charter markets, the small bareboat, barely exists here.

Why nobody bareboats

The atolls are rings of coral with passes through them, the reefs are unmarked in many places and rise from deep water without warning, and the charts are not good enough to navigate on alone. Boats move between eight in the morning and four in the afternoon with the sun high enough to read water color. Local knowledge of which passes are usable in which swell is what a Maldivian crew is actually selling.

What a Maldives boat charter week looks like

A liveaboard, usually a motor yacht or a large catamaran with a crew of four to six, based out of Male and working one or two atolls over seven nights. The itinerary is dive and surf led rather than harbour led, because there are almost no harbours: the boat anchors in a lagoon and the day is spent in the water. A separate dive dhoni often follows the boat carrying tanks and compressors.
