Tuscany's coast is the least known charter ground in Italy and one of the better ones, because the Tuscan archipelago puts seven islands within a day's sail of the mainland and almost nobody outside Italy charters there. Elba is the big one, Giglio and Capraia are the good ones, and Montecristo is closed to visitors.
Tuscany boat holidays: what is available
Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 211 boats in reach of Tuscany with a floor of 150 EUR a day, which is the cheapest entry of any Italian region in this record. The bases are at Piombino and San Vincenzo opposite Elba, at Punta Ala and Castiglione della Pescaia further south, and on Elba itself at Portoferraio. Nautilus Yachting prices an Italian low season bareboat monohull at around 1,200 GBP a week.
The seven islands
Elba is ten miles off Piombino and big enough for a week on its own. Capraia is twenty miles north west, volcanic and almost empty. Giglio is south, with a harbour under a walled hill town. Giannutri, Pianosa and Gorgona are small and partly restricted, and Montecristo is a nature reserve closed to landing except by permit issued in tiny numbers. All seven sit inside a national park with anchoring rules that vary island by island.
Why so few foreign charters come
Because the marketing goes to Sardinia and the Amalfi coast, and because the Tuscan coast has no airport of its own: Pisa and Florence are an hour and two hours from the marinas. What that buys is a cruising ground with Italian prices, Italian food and very few charter boats in it, which in August on this sea is worth more than a shorter transfer.
