Yacht charter marseille: what the largest fleet in Provence charges, and where the calanques let a boat go

Marseille is the largest charter port in Provence and almost nobody outside France treats it as a destination, which is the opportunity. The Calanques, twelve miles of limestone inlets between the city and Cassis, are a national park reachable in under an hour from the Vieux Port, and the fleet that serves them is bigger than Saint Tropez's and cheaper.

The size of the fleet

Read on 11 September 2026, Sailo lists 101 boats in reach of Marseille, which is more than any other French port in this record apart from the Cote d'Azur as a whole. Saint Tropez, the coast's most famous charter harbour, lists 162 across a much larger area and from a floor of 570 EUR a day. Marseille's fleet is weighted towards sailing boats and small motor boats rather than the motor yachts that dominate the Riviera.

The Calanques

Sormiou, Morgiou, Sugiton, En Vau and Port Pin: narrow inlets between white limestone cliffs, most of them with no road access, all of them within twelve miles of the Vieux Port. They are a national park, which means anchoring is regulated, some inlets are buoyed and a few are closed in the fire season. En Vau is the famous one and Sugiton the prettiest, and both fill on a summer Saturday by eleven in the morning.

The mistral, which is the local hazard

Marseille sits at the bottom of the Rhone valley and the mistral funnels down it at thirty to fifty knots, several times a month, for two or three days at a time. It arrives with a clear sky and almost no warning to anyone not watching the forecast, and it makes the west facing calanques untenable. Every charter briefing here covers it, and a week in Provence should carry two spare days for it.

Where else a week goes

East along the coast to Cassis, La Ciotat and the Iles d'Hyeres, which are Porquerolles, Port Cros and the Levant, and are the best cruising ground in mainland France. That is sixty miles from Marseille and a comfortable week each way. West is the Camargue and the Gulf of Lion, which is open, shallow and exposed, and is not where charter boats go.
