France charters on four coasts that have nothing in common except the paperwork. The Cote d'Azur is the most expensive water in Europe. Corsica is the French islands. Brittany and Normandy are tidal and demanding. The Atlantic coast south of the Loire is warm, shallow and almost unknown outside France.
The national numbers
Read on 11 September 2026, Click and Boat lists 10,570 boats across France at an average of 532 EUR a day, from a floor of 178, which is the largest and one of the cheapest national fleets in this record. Within it the range is enormous: Sailo lists 162 boats around Saint Tropez from 570 EUR a day to 24,000, and 10 at Monaco at an average of 4,954.
The Mediterranean coasts
The Cote d'Azur from Saint Tropez to Menton is the famous one and the dearest, with the Iles de Lerins off Cannes the best value day on it. Marseille and Provence carry the Calanques national park within twelve miles of the Vieux Port and the largest fleet in the south. Corsica is a day's sail from both and is where the French themselves charter, with the Bonifacio strait and Sardinia beyond it.
The tidal coasts
Brittany, from the Gulf of Morbihan round to Saint Malo, has a tidal range of up to twelve metres, streams that run at six knots in the Raz de Sein and a chain of islands that make it the best sailing in France for a crew that can navigate. Normandy is the same discipline. Neither is a Mediterranean week with different food: charter companies there want tidal experience and say so.
Choosing between them
If the week is about swimming and eating, the Mediterranean coasts. If it is about sailing, Brittany. If it is about scenery, Corsica. If it is about money, the Atlantic coast around La Rochelle and the Ile de Re, which has the shallowest water, the mildest tides of the tidal coasts and the lowest prices of the four.
