Hvar is the busiest harbour in Croatia in August and one of the smallest. The town quay takes a couple of dozen boats, the anchorage in front of it is shallow and exposed, and the Pakleni islands a mile offshore are where almost everybody actually spends the night. Chartering to Hvar rather than from it is the practical answer.
Where a Hvar boat comes from
There is no large charter fleet on the island itself. The bases that serve it are at Split, Trogir and Seget on the mainland, ninety minutes to two hours away by sea. Read on 11 September 2026, Croatia Yachting publishes weeks from 600 EUR at Trogir and from 752 at Sibenik, and The Moorings starts a seven day Croatian charter for two at 1,885 USD. Hvar is then the second or third night of the week rather than the handover port.
The Pakleni islands
A chain of wooded islets a mile off the town, with Palmizana the main anchorage and mooring field and a row of bays behind it. This is where the fleet lies in August, because the town quay is full by two in the afternoon and the reservation system for it is not one most charter crews win. A tender ride into Hvar at nine in the evening is the normal arrangement and is far better than fighting for the quay.
The rest of the week
Vis, two hours south west, is the furthest inhabited island from the mainland and was closed to foreigners until 1989, which is why it still feels different. Korcula is south east. Brac, with Bol and the Zlatni Rat spit, is between Hvar and the mainland. All of it is short hops in sheltered water, which is why Croatia works as a first bareboat even though Hvar itself is hard.
